Kelly Pickler wrote a song about them, they have been spotted on the red carpet numerous times, and style experts have written extensively about them. Red shoes have a reputation that not only surpasses that of “the little black dress,” but they also make a splash wherever they go – especially in Tinseltown.
For 2007-2008, red seemed (and still seems) to be all the rage. On any given day you will come across snapshots of celebrities carrying bright red purses, wearing short red skirts or strolling past the paparazzi in all different kinds of sexy red shoes. No other celebrity, however, has been ridiculed as much for her tribute to the red shoe rage than Heather Graham. When the lovely Ms. Graham arrived on the red carpet at the 2007 SAG Awards in red Versace platforms, she joked about them with E!’s then Guiliana DePandi by saying that the red platforms were her “stripper shoes.” Most people agreed that the red shoes were “begging for a pole dance” or “cute, but not for the red carpet.”
While this fashion faux paux hasn’t been repeated since, numerous celebrities have been spotted in red shoes, but they have all been careful to avoid clichés and chunky red shoes over five inches tall. People who were spotted in red shoes include: Avril Lavigne, Cameron Diaz, Jessica Alba, Kelis, Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, Sienna Miller, Kirsten Bell, Victoria Beckham, Reese Witherspoon, Beyonce, Nicole Kidman, and Natalie Portman, to name a few. Cameron Diaz wore the little red devils with a classic little black dress and Sienna Miller decided to pair her red shoes with a white dress. Kelis rocked a pair of red heels on stage, while Kirsten Bell was spotted wearing her red tappers with a shiny black skirt and white ruffled blouse.
Like Carlos Santana, who recently designed a gorgeous collection of red shoes to help raise money to fight stroke and heart disease in women, Ms. Natalie Portman has decided to design a line with animal-awareness in mind, which will also benefit several charities. Her vegan-friendly collection called the "Natalie Portman Collection," will be made without animal ingredients -- no fur, no leather, no feathers - and 5 percent of the profits will be donated to charity. The first Natalie Portman Collection design was a pair of red patent high-heeled Mary Janes, which Ms. Portman proudly wore on the label's website when it launched.
